The All Time Techmeme Leaderboard from The Statbot
The Techmeme leaderboard is limited only to the past 30 days. Here’s the Top 100 Sites on Techmeme, all time:
This list, is somewhat different from the current official one one. Most notable is that Engadget, which is at #2 here, is at #15 right now, while ReadWriteWeb, which is at #12 here, is at #4 now. TechCrunch keeps ruling, though it’s “presence” (i.e. Headlines from Site / Total Headlines) is drastically lower here than it is right now. Here’s a small chart showing how things changed:
TechCrunch has always been ahead of the rest, except for a brief time during March 08 when CNET News.com almost went over TechCrunch, but TechCrunch then breaks free and goes way past CNET News.com. The NYTimes has been “very” consistent here, with a pretty straight curve, while ReadWriteWeb has been slowly climbing.
But, Engadget has taken a nosedive after actually overtaking CNET News.com for a period of time in Jan 08 (CES, I presume). It’s now contributing less than 1% of Techmeme Headlines. Any thoughts why this is the case?

Hey Yuvi…happy to see another Techmeme study that I didn’t need to do myself! It’s good that you noted the case of Engadget. I wanted to comment on that, and do so below.
So it should be clear that changes between all time and current rankings can be attributed to these factors:
1. Changes to the blogs / news sites (e.g. more/fewer posts, or a shift in focus)
2. Changes in the blogging ecosystem (e.g. more people read and therefore link to certain blogs)
3. Changes to Techmeme (e.g. more weighting of original reporting, biasing for/against certain topics)
Engadget and other gadget blogs like Gizmodo and CrunchGear have been whacked recently on Techmeme by my decision to reduce the amount of gadget blog type coverage (i.e. primarily cause #3). The reasons for this are too long to explain here but involve my best guess as to what Techmeme readers want to see. Just to be clear, tuning Techmeme’s focus is something I’ve been doing all along and something I elaborated on in the “Is it biased?” section here: http://news.techmeme.com/071001/techmeme-leaderboard Still, I wanted to state this explicitly since the effects have been so pronounced.
ReadWriteWeb and TechCrunch have both benefitted from changes of the #1, #2, and #3 variety. Since September 2005 Richard and Michael have gone full time, improved as bloggers, hired staff, and now post a whole lot more frequently. In the same period, the ecosystem has changed too: their blogs have many more readers, which include bloggers who link to their posts, which helps them on Techmeme. Another ecosystem change: publicists are happy to offer them access to exclusives. Techmeme’s evolution has benefitted them as well: it favors hard (”pro”) news reports more than it did initially.
I could probably write a whole lot more on this but will now go back to being reticent and mysterious, I hope.

Thanks for the rollup information. One question: News.com at No. 4 and No. 8 would change the rankings overall. It’s the same site. Should these be lumped together?
May 10th, 2008 at 5:23 am #Yuvi
@Larry: News.com.com stopped appearing sometime during September ‘07, and new stories from CNET had the url http://www.News.com. That might be a contributing factor, but, the fact that I lump together all the CNET blogs as well (eg. news.com/the-social, news.com/one-more-thing, etc) into News.com might have contributed to this.
So, if you’re speaking “organizations”, then, yep, CNET News has the strongest presence on the Techmeme Leaderboard

This “kid” is the real deal. Very bright future.
Also, while I realize that TechMeme’s algorithm is of course propietary (sp), it would be extremely useful, I feel, to have some specific information in regard to what criteria comprise the TechMeme rankings, due to the fact that TechMeme rankings are closely studied and followed in our industry as an important indicator of influence (and one of the very first stops daily - and repeatedly during the day - by many A-list (and other) bloggers, tech early adopters (and I would guess also luminaries).
Gabe’s comment about remaining mysterious is fine for him personally if he wishes to do so, but not as helpful at all in my opinion if it pertains also to his creation TechMeme.

@Yuvi. thanks for the explainer–there’s also that .com.com thing I never quite got. Good stuff. Thanks

@Larry: I’m pretty sure you know that news.com.com redirects to http://www.news.com. Stories ‘before September ‘07 seem to have used the news.com.com permalink.
