Flickr Faves Compatibility Index

June 13th, 2008 · 27 Comments

I stole the concept for the “FriendFeed Likes Compatibility Index” from Hutch Carpenter (you can find a working implementation here courtesy Felix (aka the Topless Programmer))

Extending the concept to Flickr works somewhat nicely, because Flickr’s Faves are conceptually similar to FriendFeed’s Likes. However, Faving something on Flickr is somewhat harder compared to Liking something on FriendFeed – You can’t fave pics directly from the Search Results page, for example. So, while a lot of people tend to have a lot of Likes on FriendFeed, the No. of Faves on Flickr tend to be limited – I have just 90, for example.

So, we need someone who faves lots and lots of photos to compute the first ever “Flickr Faves Compatibility Index”. Isn’t that Thomas Hawk? ;)

So basically, the Flickr Faves Compatibility Index is the people who have faved the same Photos you have. Has interesting data only if you fave lots of pics. As usual, reply in the comments if you want yours computed ;)

Thomas Hawk’s Flickr Faves Compatibility Index

  1. Karen.Strolia - 1389 Common Faves (3.99% %)
  2. raoulpop - 778 Common Faves (2.23% %)
  3. !Andrew Moore! - 764 Common Faves (2.19% %)
  4. fetching - 537 Common Faves (1.54% %)
  5. Jeremy Brooks - 447 Common Faves (1.28% %)
  6. zsoltika - 405 Common Faves (1.16% %)
  7. Cheesy Reese - 396 Common Faves (1.14% %)
  8. t-squared - 374 Common Faves (1.07% %)
  9. torbakhopper - 368 Common Faves (1.06% %)
  10. ropeboy / sambr - 367 Common Faves (1.05% %)
  11. travísimo - 359 Common Faves (1.03% %)
  12. myla kent - 348 Common Faves (1.00% %)
  13. * cate * - 343 Common Faves (0.98% %)
  14. SeenyaRita - 333 Common Faves (0.96% %)
  15. av_producer - 304 Common Faves (0.87% %)
  16. davidteter - 292 Common Faves (0.84% %)
  17. aqui-ali - 287 Common Faves (0.82% %)
  18. raspberrytart - 281 Common Faves (0.81% %)
  19. roamin - 270 Common Faves (0.78% %)
  20. ThePhoenix101 - 268 Common Faves (0.77% %)
  21. SF buckaroo - 265 Common Faves (0.76% %)
  22. denis collette - 261 Common Faves (0.75% %)
  23. andertho - 254 Common Faves (0.73% %)
  24. helveticaneue - 250 Common Faves (0.72% %)
  25. Mrsth - 249 Common Faves (0.71% %)

And here’s the obligatory Chart (And yep, I like Bars better than Pie’s ;))

Hope folks can “discover” people who share similar interests via this. Automate This, Felix!

Very cool work! I, sadly, never fav flickr photos. But this is really interesting info! I dunno if I’ll be able to automate, got another project I’ve been (not) working on forever that I want to see if I can knock out!

@Felix - I believe you’ll have a hard time automating this, even if you do get the time to try - Thomas Hawk has 34k Favs, and Flickr gives them to you in batches of 50. Now, you’ve to get all his faves, and then get all the people who’ve faved them (in batches of 50 again!). Takes time.

My app took about 25 mins to get Thomas’s one done ;)

I somewhat intended to put a smiley in the “Automate This, Felix!” thing (I was in the idea that it was similar in tone to “Shut up, Wesley!”. Wonder what made that into my mind).

    Post.Insert (New Smiley(), Places.Appropriate)

Great work (in FF and with this). How much easier would it be with around 650 faves?

    Thank you.

Very cool idea! Since Thomas Hawk has so many favorites, it makes him a great target for such an analysis. Good stuff!

Your bar charts would be much more effective with the larger bars at the top. To do this in Excel: select the vertical axis, hold CTRL while pressing 1 (numeral one), which brings up the Format Axis dialog. Check the box for Categories in Reverse Order, and select the option for Horizontal Axis Crosses: At maximum Category.

What a really cool idea, this is starting to get to Pandora levels of neat. I would be thrilled if you would do mine for me if you are still doing some. My flickr stream is (I lots o’ faves): http://www.flickr.com/photos/fortphoto/

Thanks and keep up the exciting work!

I am catching up from a week vacation and found Thomas post this evening playing with Feedly.

Once again you caught my attention with your analysis. I have 1491 favorites if your offer is still open.
